NEW:William Lytle Family
I am looking for information on the family of William Lytle who came to Texas from Tennessee in the 1840s. He was born on 2-8-1804 in Pennsylvania and died on 1-14-1878 in Medina County, TX. He had two brothers that I know of: Francis and Joseph who also came to Texas. William married Mary (Polly) Gullett (no date) probably in Maury Co. TN. William and Mary were known as Uncle Billy and Aunt Polly. They had 2 sons: Charles, born 1828 and Samuel (born 1831) in Columbia, TN. William had a ranch in Atascosa County as did his nephew, John Thomas Lytle, (Francis' son). Lytle Texas is named for him. I would appreciate any information concerning the Lytle Family. I know that descendants of Charles Lytle still live in and around Lytle, Texas. So, I am hoping that I will be able to obtain some information. Thank you. Kathy Lytle

I am interested in any information regarding the Marosa family. Lucien Marosa emigrated from Alcase, France with Henry Castro in 1843, and was part of the early Texas settlers who started Castroville, Texas. He was only 11 at that time. Later, his daughter, Sophie Marosa, married Antonio Lopez on December 24, 1891, in Atascosa. Antonio Lopez in buried somewhere in Poteet, Texas. I am certain Sophie Marosa is also buried there. We are uncertain as to what happen to Sophie's father, Lucien Marosa. Perhaps he went back to France? If anyone has any information out there, I would be greatly appreciative.

NEW: Cornelius & Sarah (Pate) Smith
Cornelius Smith was born in Ireland about 1814. In the early 1830s he sailed to America. By the early 1850s he was Texas bound, winding up in Goliad Co. first and then living out his life in Atascosa Co. He married Sarah Pate before 1852, supposedly in Alabama. Cornelius died in 1891 near the McCoy community. Am looking for a marriage record for this couple, parent info and any old photos that could be copied. Any contacts would be appreicated. Thanks.

My uncle was in Pleasanton recently and purchased the book "History of Atascosa County". Within it's pages he found passages referring to William Henry Smith (a lawyer) and Mary Ann Goodwin, who were married in 1869. I can find them on the 1870 Atascosa County census. I was wondering if there were any other information available on William Henry Smith. NEW: Sanders
Sowell reported that a number of men from the McCoy ranch were killed ca 1860's in a surprise daytime clash with Indians. Among those Sowell reported as having died was "one of the Sanders", as well as one of the English family (his 16-year-old brother later married his 30-year-old widow. Is there any indication in Atacosa County regarding which Sanders was killed. Julius Sanders of Uvalde County had sons: Pleasant Jackson, John, James, and Robert. We had thought it was James who was killed but have recently found him with wife, Caroline (Weaver) Sanders, and son, Pleasant Wiley, in the 1870 census for McMullen County. If either the McCoy family or others in your organization can add anything on the Sanders family, it would be greatly appreciated.

Annie Willie Ridgeway,b. 1877 (m. D. Rufus Winn 1995 in Edwards Co. TX), daughter of Mary Frances (Boales) and Green M. Ridgeway, whose other children were George Riley b. 1873 and Green Warren b. ca 1875. Green M. Ridgeway died ca 1878,rumored to have been killed by a stray bullet at some social gathering. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Green M. Ridgeway is found as a 1-year-old in the 1850 census for Montgomery County, Texas. Green's mother was Mahala Jones, whose mother had married 2d an Elkins, and died around 1850 leaving several small children--Mahala's Elkins step-siblings--whom Mahala raised. (The Elkins and Crane families intermarried, if that's a help.) McEuen, McMeel, McMeal, Daniels Connection
I am looking for info on my Grandfather, Frank McEuen, I don't have a birthdate, and no specific date of death. He was born in Dallas Texas, and died in Nashville, TN. in 1955 or 1956. He was an artist/painter. He left my mother and aunt and uncle and my Grandmother in about 1946 or so to parts unknown. I am also looking for any relationship between Frank McEuen, and a Frank Daniels, Danny Daniels, or Melville McMeal. Melville McMeal(McMeel) was an actor in Burlesque and traveled with his Wife Phyllis Griffin Daniels and his little daughter Bebe. Bebe became a silent film star, and went on to become one of the most recognized actors of her time. She and her family moved to England. My mother always told me she was related to us. If anyone recognizes any of these names, please email me at BebeGirl2001@excite.com or email Tina DeSoto at BebeDe58@aol.com. I know that I have limited information on dates of birth, death, etc. Frank McEuen had to have been born between 1904 and 1915. I have no idea how old he was when he married my Grandmother Eva Littlepage. Their children are Mary Carolyn McEuen, Serita McEuen, and Danny McEuen. They were all born in Pecos Texas as far as I know. My Grandfather left them after Danny was born. Frank died in Nashville TN I guess he was there trying to visit his family, I don't know. Thanks for your help. God Bless.

looking for the truth:
To anyone from Atascosa County who has this information: There is a certain cemetery (I don't know which one, but I know it's an old one)in Atascosa County with the family plot of Luna. I have never been there and I don't know exactly how many cemeteries Atascosa County has. But I would like to know if anyone has either seen this cemetary or has any information on the cemetary (or the Luna family itself) Is it true that the further down the line you go, the grave markers start to bear Japanese first names? I don't know if anyone has any information on this, but it would be most helpful to me in figuring out my family roots. I was recently told by my brother that our descendants, the Lunas, originated from Japanese people living in Spain. Eventually they settled in Atascosa County and (supposedly) their graves are still there. I would like to find out if it is true or not. If anyone can enlighten me on this please contact me at the email provided: dksailorravegirl@yahoo.com

W. BLEVINS, 22 m, Farmer, Ill; Maria C, 16 f, Tex; A. J., 12 m, Tex; W. N. NICHERS, 10 m, Tex; (should be William N/M. Nichols) James A McGREW, 7 m, Tex; John F. McGREW, 5 m, Tex; Robert, 3 m, Tex. I next find William Nichols: 1870 ATASCOSA Co., TX census: Pct 1 Pleasanton; taken July 1870 259-259 NICHOLLS, W.M.; m; w; 22; w; m; Farmer; 184; b. TX Martha J.; 23; f; w; keeping house; b. TX Francis E.; 8/12; f; w; b.TX Then in 1880 William Nichols is a widower and living again with the McGrew's on the following census: 1880 Atascosa Co., TX 81-81 McGREW, Jefferson; age 69 Rebecca, age 60 William Nichols; age 27 b.TX (William is listed as a son-in-law instead of stepson) Emeline Nichols; dau; age 11 TX George Nichols; son; 7; TX Also living in the same household is the John F. and Nancy Tom family and California Henderson, sister of John F. William Hendrickson Everitt
This is my third year as president of the Angelina County Genealogical Society here in Lufkin, Texas. My husband offered my genealogical experience to the Lufkin Masonic Lodge who were in the process of trying to locate all the past masters of the Lodge in order to secure pictures. With my gene. experience, I was able to dig up several people from the past. We only lack 4 pictures having them all. One of them is Mr. William Hendrickson Everitt, who died 8 Sept. 1957 and was buried in Pleasanton, Atascosa Co., TX. What I need is a list of his survivors so I can hope to find one with a picture of Mr. Everitt. Also, in researching his father's name, I found the most interesting story and I will share it with you if you would like. It is about James Carr Everitt in the Civil War and how he escaped and ended up being rescued by the James gang (Jessie James). Will appreciate any help you can give me.

NEW: HILBURN
Mary Elizabeth ("Poppy") Hilburn Barber was my 4th Great-Grandmother. She came to Atascosa County in the 1860-70's after the death of my 4th Great-Grandfather Zibie Barber. According to family history, "A few years after the death of her husband, Zibie Barber, she, in company with a number of relatives and friends from Tennessee (Perry County), came to Texas, traveling in wagons. Mary Elizabeth Hillburn Barber had a sister who was Jane Hilburn. Jane Hilburn was married to Jimmy Barber, brother of Zibie Barber. I believe Jimmy Barber and Jane Hilburn Barber also came to Atascosa County with Mary Elizabeth Hilburn Barber and other Hilburn relatives. Mary Elizabeth Hilburn Barber later relocated to Caldwell County, Texas, where she died June 1911. She and her Barber descendants are buried at the Liberty Cemetery in Dale, Texas. I have further HILBURN family history to share.

KELLY/KELLEY/Ragsdale/Franks/Carter/Comer-Corner-Conner
I am researching my g.g.g. grandfather, Tobias Kelly. He came to old Amphion (later Pleasanton) in Atascosa County in 1856-1858. He was one of the first settlers of Pleasanton. He lived in Atascosa County until 1870-1880. He has children and relatives who were killed and/or died in Atascosa County. I have information on this ancestor and allied surnames above to exchange with anyone. I would especially like to know of a gravesite for Tobias Kelly, his wife, Margaret and a son, Green B. Kelly (John Greenberry Kelly) killed in 1858, all in Atascosa County, I believe. Would like to know of a gravesite for Matilda Ragsdale Corner/Comer/Conner.

I have found Mr. and Mrs. Sneed and Ms. Smith on the 1930 Census living in Christine City, Atascosa County, TX. Family rumors have it that William Sneed was a retired doctor and later in 1930. I'm related by their oldest son Thomas Pate Smith. My family and I have been trying to trace Cornelius in Ireland. Last year we commisioned a professional genealogist to search for information. I have read some of the postings and I'm confused about Sarah's Parents. The information I have may be wrong. However, I do have a complete list of their children. I am interested in finding more relations. We have a Smith-Tausch family reunion this year and any new information would be great. I certainly would be glad to share any information I have. I am also interested in saving the cemetery that Cornelius and Sarah are buried. I have been told by my family members that have been there that it is in great need to be tamed a little before it is completely taken over. The current owners of the ranch to not take care of it in anyway. Thanks for any help.

Mexican Genealogy: Following the Paper Trail
Are you trying to learn more about your ancestors that came from Mexico? Trying to figure out how to find key information so you can trace your Mexican roots? Do you know the name of the hacienda or villa or city they came from? You can purchase "Mexican-American Genealogical Research: Following the Paper Trail to Mexico" by going to the Heritage Books website: http://marketplacesolutions.net/secure/heritagebooks/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=HBI&Product_Code=S2139 This the description: Mexican-American Genealogical Research: Following the Paper Trail to Mexico - John Schmal and Donna Morales. Mexican-American genealogical research has long been an under-appreciated pastime, practiced by a select few. However, "Mexican-American Genealogical Research: Following the Paper Trail to Mexico" brings a new resource into the public eye and provides the everyday American with suggestions for locating Mexican ancestors. The most important piece of information for the Mexican-American genealogist to obtain is the name of the place from which his or her Mexican ancestors came. In this respect, the search for Mexican roots is exactly the same as that of every other ethnic group that came to America. If you cannot locate your ancestral town, it will be very difficult for you to get past the border to learn more about your ancestors. Donna Morales and John Schmal have collaborated in the presentation of this resource guide, which illustrates many documents from the family of Ms. Morales, both in Mexico and the United States. The utilization of information from birth and death certificates, newspaper obituaries, naturalization records, alien registration forms, and funeral records are discussed. All of these have the potential of helping the reader to determine the place of origin of his or her Mexican ancestor. The authors also illustrate church and civil records from Mexico and show the reader the amazing amount of detail that the researcher will find in such records. The search for Indian roots in Mexico is also discussed in some detail. And, in the last chapter, the authors present an outline to help the reader get started and to organize his or her data. (2002), 2004, 5½x8½, paper, index, 166 pp. $21.00 S2139 ISBN: 0-7884-2139-5 The book includes a whole chapter on border crossing records: visas, alien identification cards, temporary permits, manifests, etc., as used in previous years. Good luck. John Schmal

My family also was originally from nearby Uvalde Co. including towns of Uvalde,Utopia and I believe Frio? I have seen and have some info from the "Atascosa County History" book I believe it is called that others have mentioned on this site. I would like to see if others are doing genealogical work on these families with emphasis on the Goodman family connection. I do not have a lot of info but would gladly share what I have and hopefully be able to find someone who has more that I don't have! Thanks! L. Goodman

I found out a couple of years ago that my gg grandmother was buried in "Poteet Cemetery" from her death certificate. We finally went there and discovered it is the same as Rutledge Cemetery. Now for my question. She is not listed on the survey of Rutledge Cemetery that you have. Her headstone looks too new to have been there since 1937. Is there any way to find out who might have replaced it?

RE: 1869 Oath by Fleming
Based on the quote below, I believe the document may an "ironclad" oath that the signer never supported the Confederacy, required in order to vote after the civil war during Reconstruction Era in the South. From The First Polish Americans by T. Lindsay Baker, Chapter 5 Reconstruction, page 85: "In the spring of 1867, the US congress had assumed control of Reconstruction, and as part of its plan it allowed only freed Negroes and men loyal to the federal government to vote....state registrars of voters were appointed...to enroll only voters who could swear an "ironclad" oath that they had never in any way supported the Confederacy. In effect these registrars were disfranchising a great many of the white voters while allowing the former slaves and the detested northern sympathizers to go to the polls. The anger of the southerners was immediate, and frequently the registrars received the brunt of the rage." The chapter continues with the tale of four registrars of voters in Karnes County, one of whom was a Pole, Emanuel Rzeppa, and his saga. It's quite interesting, even if your not a Bandera Pole.

NEW: KINDLA & KORUS
Joseph KINDLA – Anastasia KORUS descendents Joseph Kindla (circa 1840 – Centawa, Prussian-controlled Poland, aka Upper Silesia) was the oldest son of Bandera Pioneer, John Kindla (1805 – 1883 St. Stanislaus cemetery, Bandera), who is my g grandfather. The 1870 Atascosa County census shows Joseph, his wife, Anastasia Korus, son Bernard 2-l/1 and Franciska age 1. Anastasia (1851) was the daughter of John Korus and Marianna Strzelczyk. Both families arrived Galveston on the Weser 3 Dec 1854. The Korus and Casper Kalka families donated land for St. Joseph Church & cemetery, aka Leming cemetery at Hwy 281 South and FM 536. It holds about 20 Kindla markers plus Korus and Kalka family members. Kindla is considered a “rare name” and I seem to be the only person researching this family. Would enjoy hearing from other researchers and long lost relatives.
